Native Village of Eyak Recieved Repatriated Land on Mummy Island
We are proud to announce that Ecotrust has transferred a tract of property on Mummy Island to the Native Village of Eyak. Ecotrust believes that the repatriation of cultural sites is important to the preservation of the relationship between Native communities and the natural resources that have sustained us for thousands of years.
This area is rich in cultural heritage and has been a village site and traditional use area for thousands of years. We plan to care for the property, to insure the safety of the cultural and spiritual resources and to provide a means to teach others about this special place.
A cultural camp of our own has been a goal for many years and we will be able to have one at Mummy Island. This is a project that has been years in the making and the Native Village of Eyak thanks Ecotrust for helping us acquire land that we can call our own. The return of this historic village site to the Tribe will empower our current efforts to preserve, renew and maintain cultural identity.
